People ask why protest instead of waiting for change. But waiting for injustices like slavery to end? That's a passive approach. True change requires action, not just patience. History shows that progress demands people pushing back against the system.
The grandfather clause in voting laws meant that if your grandfather could vote, you could too. For people of color, this meant their grandfathers likely couldn't vote, barring them from participating. Civil rights leaders fought tirelessly to change this, recognizing that the right to vote is fundamental to all other rights.
During Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era, the Green Book was essential for Black travelers. It showed safe places to stay, eat, and get gas, and warned of dangerous 'sundown towns' where people of color had to leave before sunset or face peril. This book was a lifeline.
It's frustrating to hear claims that only certain groups worked hard to build this nation. Millions of acres were gifted to European descendants, providing instant generational wealth. People of color, however, were denied such opportunities, often unable to even purchase land despite scraping together funds.
