Join us TODAY at 6 p.m. for a FREE America250 celebration of gospel music, freedom, and hope, featuring live performances, storytelling, and a community sing-along. This event, honoring oral traditions through generations of communities, will take place in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium at the Two Mississippi Museums, in partnership with the Grassroots Gospel Project. This program is part of the MDAH Religion Initiative, which is made possible by a grant through Lilly Endowment’s Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative.

On this day in 1966, James Meredith was ambushed and shot in Hernando on the second day of his March Against Fear. After his recovery, he was able to conclude his march that culminated with an estimated 15,000 participants at the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson and was the largest civil rights demonstration in Mississippi history.
