Today, the City of Jackson mourns the passing of one of its former leaders—Mayor Marty Griffin. Marty served our city with dedication, leaving a lasting mark not only through his time in office but also in his continued public service, including his work with the Treasurer’s Office. His commitment to Jackson was unwavering, and his passion for people was evident in every role he held.
This is a profound loss for our city, for the many colleagues who served alongside him, and most importantly, for his family. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to them during this difficult time.
Mayor Griffin’s legacy will live on in the people and the progress he helped shape. May we honor him by continuing the work of service he so deeply believed in.
Mayor’s are forever. And one day, we will all face our final day in office.
My fellow residents of Jackson, 
It is with a heavy heart that I address the tragic events that have unfolded in our city over the past two days. On Friday afternoon, a 22-year-old man lost his life following a shooting on Warwick Road. Then, in the early hours of Saturday, a senseless act of violence in Summit Township claimed the life of a 44-year-old man and left three others injured when multiple assailants opened fire on a group gathered on a porch on Lincoln Court.  
These incidents are not just statistics—they are profound losses that reverberate through families, neighborhoods, and our entire community. To the loved ones of the victims, I extend my deepest condolences. We mourn with you and stand by you during this unimaginable time.
Our law enforcement agencies are diligently investigating these crimes to bring those responsible to justice. I urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in these investigations. Your cooperation is vital in ensuring the safety and security of our community. 
While these events are deeply troubling, they do not define Jackson. We are a resilient city, united by our commitment to one another. In recent years, we’ve made significant strides in reducing gun violence through community engagement, enhanced policing strategies, and preventative programs. However, these incidents remind us that our work is far from over. 
Let us honor the memories of those we’ve lost by reaffirming our dedication to building a safer, more compassionate Jackson. Together, we can foster a community where every resident feels secure and valued.

Here's a street closure you'll want to know about! The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is closing the Cooper Street bridge over the Grand River in Downtown Jackson starting Monday, Jan. 13.
MDOT is fully replacing the street's deteriorating bridge and outdated water main. Cooper will be closed between E. Michigan and E. Washington Avenues through Oct. 2025. A detour will be posted.

Thank you to everyone who participated in or tuned in to our City Council meeting on November 26, 2024.
Here’s a quick recap of what we accomplished:
• We honored Councilmember Shalanda Hunt with a proclamation for her dedicated service to the Fifth Ward and the City of Jackson.
• The Council confirmed the Special Assessment Roll for meterless parking for the upcoming fiscal year.
• Several important resolutions were approved, including:
• Setting City Council meeting dates for 2025.
• Approving liquor license transfers and downtown events like the “12 Bars of Christmas” and “Christmas in the City.”
• We advanced key projects, including updates on East Side economic development, infrastructure improvements, and grant funding for public safety.
• We approved changes to the Youth Council ordinance, expanding membership eligibility to include middle and high school students, ensuring more young voices are heard.
• The Council also finalized agreements supporting trail construction, water system improvements, and a strategic property exchange to foster more housing development in the city.
These decisions reflect our ongoing commitment to a thriving, vibrant, and inclusive Jackson. Thank you for staying engaged, and we look forward to continuing to build a brighter future for our community.
