I learned the hard way. Before my husband and I had children, we gave up everything so I could pursue ministry like I thought I should. We endured what we thought was "our cross to bear" in order to stand for what we believed. We let religion slap us in the face so to speak. Sound familiar?

2 Corinthians 11:20 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bo***ge, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.

We finally both came to a place where we asked God what the truth was. He showed us that religion is not Jesus. That's a simple concept. Religion is another "Jesus" wrapped in a white robe to look righteous when it is actually taking Jesus out of the picture and putting in self works.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4 (KJV)

3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

The same problems they had then are still going on today. Going to church, reading the bible, dressing a certain way, etc. will not get a person to heaven. It also will not make an already saved person more righteous. God doesn't sit up in heaven checking off a mark by your name when you "do" something to show how righteous you are. The name of the book in heaven is called "The Lamb's Book of Life". The reason being is because the blood of the Lamb is the only way to heaven. If you frustrate the grace of God with your "doing", you risk falling from Grace.

Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

Be wise my friends. Know the scriptures. Read the bible because you want to know God, not because you have to. You are never too young or too old to know God for yourself. I first knew God when I was a child, but it was soon clouded by works. Thankfully, I still sought to know who He was though His Word. He later helped me understand what it meant. Seek to know the Person that saves you by His blood. Read the bible and find out Who He really is. Don't believe anyone. Search it out for yourself. It's easier to believe the truth than it is to be burdened with works.

Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Get yourself a concordance and find out what the bible means in the language God chose to write it in. There had to be a reason why it was written in the language He chose. God doesn't do anything by mistake.
