While teaching massage many years ago, I used to open class around the holidays with a meditation about pausing to consider how your treat people, especially service workers, who likely encounter rude people all day long through no fault of their own. This time of year, despite marketing to be joyous and thankful, can be a very stressful time… and I like to remind myself that I don’t know what may have happened to someone else- I only see a fraction of their day when I encounter them. I don’t really know how hard they work or if someone called out today and they’re trying their best or if they’re on their 13th day of work in a row or if they’re struggling to keep their home or if they got diagnosed with something scary or if may have just sat bedside as their best friend passed into whatever is after this. But they still showed up. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for remembering to be kind. I am so incredibly grateful for the moments over the last few weeks that have brought joy and connection- it makes it all worth it. Here’s a moment of joy, one my daydreams have taken me to over and over again on a scenic byway in one of my favorite places. Cheers, friends. I see you.
