Radiant heating systems, such as heating stoves or in-floor hot water tubing, provide the most comfortable and natural heat in a home. However, they're slow to heat up and can be expensive to install.

Steam radiator systems are not seen in most modern homes; however, they are still around. Steam systems come in two varieties, one-pipe and two-pipe systems. With one-pipe systems, the water and steam travel in the same pipe but in opposite directions, while in a two-pipe system, steam flows in one pipe, and water returns in the other.

If you do not think there is enough warm air coming from your furnace, check the filter, and change it if it is dirty or more than a month old. In addition, check the return air registers to make sure they are clean and are not blocked by furniture, appliances, or other objects.

Different systems use different filters that need to be changed on different schedules, but one thing's the same: The best thing you can do to make sure your furnace keeps going is to change the filter regularly. An HVAC expert can make sure you know when to change the filter.
