Tasting the FLX
11/02/2025
Yesterday, I went for my first FLX tasting in a bit! It was wonderful to be out—you could feel the post-harvest energy. People are excited. I took a friend to - I've missed you!-and he had NEVER been!!! It's such a joy to share my favorite places with people. We tasted several whites (the '21 and '22 Reislings were yummy and fairly different)! The '21 was a little lighter and brighter with fruit, while the '22 was slightly fuller bodied and mellower in the mouth. Appetizer wine and dinner (pasta, poultry) wine, in my mind. Then the '24 Sauv Blanc, the '23 Gewurtz, and the Field Notes blend. If you are a Sauv Blanc person, this one is yummy with more of the FLX terrior-a little less mineral than a typical NZ Sauv Blanc. The Gewurtz was lovely. Great balance of acidity, fruit, and spice.
Then we moved onto reds! The '23 Pinot Noir (light bodied with red berry and a hint of cognac), '21 Maximilien (a perennial favorite of mine-Cab Sauv and Merlot blend) with dark red berry and light oak), then the '20 Le Petit Caporal (Cab Sauv, Merlot and Cab Franc) drier with deeper, darker fruit flavor, the '23 Ravinous Red (Blaufrankisch and Merlot) with medium body and oak, which was our favorite red of the day.
We tasted a few others! So many great options and hard to limit ourselves! (We split our tasting, so no, this wasn't a ridiculous amount of wine to taste in one visit...😉 .) I can never leave without having some bubbles and the ‘18 Sparkling Blanc de Blanc was delicious - very dry with subtle apple and brightness. As shown in the photo, I also wanted to try the '22 Ampersand (port style) and found it lovely. If you haven't tried port-style wines, please do. This one has great depth of flavor while not being too heavy or syrupy. Great for cheese pairings or dessert.
Thank you for yet another wonderful tasting experience. The perfect spot to get back into my/our tasting groove! Cheers! 🍷🥂
