🩻Medical Case Monday!
Let’s create a scenario here…your 1 year old, MI, Labrador Retriever puppy (who is notorious for eating things he shouldn’t) presents to us for vomiting over the last 2 days. He is otherwise acting okay, so your doctor recommends a barium study.
Well, what is a barium study? A barium study in dogs is a diagnostic imaging procedure using a contrast medium (liquid barium) to outline the gastrointestinal (GI) tract on X-rays. It helps to detects foreign objects, obstruction, intussusception, tumors, or motility issues, often requiring 12-24 hours of fasting and multiple, timed radiographs.

I have a 11-year-old Chinese Shar Pei who long story short developed an extremely life-threatening necrotic leg infection after very bad episode of Shar Pei Fever. All other vets in the area declined the ability to take care of her. Even Med Vet Dallas, the supposedly top surgical center in DFW wanted to take her leg and would not guarantee her survival. Dr. Capps and Case worked together to not only save my dog but were also able to nearly completely rehabilitate her leg. It has nearly been one year since the incident and I still have my dog because of their amazing care, willingness to think outside of norms, and dedication to getting her better. Although she still requires occasional check-ins due to some fluid buildup, she is happy and is able to go on several walks a day and has even been able to go on several hiking adventures since the incident. Additionally, they continue to be incredibly supportive with her follow ups and check ins continues to support her recovery as best possible. For as long as this clinic remains under Dr. Capps, I will always bring my dogs here.
