Pacing lead insulation must withstand repeated motion, friction, and wear in a body-fluid environment.

NANOVEA evaluated silicone and polyether-polyurethane endocardial lead materials in Hanks’ solution using nano-friction and reciprocating wear testing. The study compared coefficient of friction, wear scar formation, and surface damage under controlled conditions.

Last week, PhD candidate Eleonora Lancia from Sapienza Università di Roma visited NANOVEA EU in Italy for a comprehensive training session focused on advanced nanoindentation of ultrasoft hydrogels.

During the session, Eleonora was trained by NANOVEA engineers Lorenzo Mendola and Walter Alabiso, Dr., who shared their expertise on the physical principles behind nanoindentation, current state-of-the-art technologies, relevant international standards, and the direct calculation of mechanical properties in soft hydrogel materials.

The training also covered the practical side of testing, including key insights for working with ultrasoft samples, selecting the right testing parameters, performing reliable indentations, and interpreting the resulting data. The hands-on session was carried out using the NANOVEA PB1000 Mechanical Tester, with Eleonora actively working on her own hydrogel samples.

After a productive technical session – and a delicious Italian pizza – the visit continued with a short introduction to optical profilometry. Using the NANOVEA JR25, the team acquired a surface scan of a hydrogel sample and reviewed its roughness parameters.
