A hose left attached traps water in the faucet, and that water can freeze, expand, and burst the sillcock—or even the plumbing inside the wall. Unhooking it only takes a minute, but it can prevent a major headache.

Quick checklist:
• Disconnect the hose
• Drain and store it
• Frost-free faucets still need the hose removed
• Add an insulated cover if you’re in a colder spot
