Dear Karis,
Of all the dates on the calendar, May 1st will forever be my favorite…
🗓️ May 1st, 1999 — 27 years ago…
In the middle of high school prom, I asked if you’d be my girlfriend with a “pinky swear.”
🗓️ May 1st, 2011 — 15 years ago…
On a dock late at night under the stars in Cinque Terre, I gave you a ring… and you said yes to forever.
🗓️ May 1st, 2013 — 13 years ago…
We signed our marriage certificate at the Hotel Del, then chased a dream across the world — beginning a life we could only imagine at the time.
🗓️ May 1st, 2015 — 11 years ago…
Sitting on a balcony in Capri, we put the final piece of a puzzle in place… and found out our greatest adventure was about to begin — becoming parents.
🗓️ May 1st — all the years since…
Not defined by where we’ve gone… but by what we’ve grown through.
The highs that stretched us.
The moments that shaped us.
And the challenges that tested us… but somehow always pulled us closer, never apart.
And this last year… more than any other… reminded me what we’re really built on.
Not things. Not plans. Not perfect conditions.
But us.
Our faith. Our family. Our ability to stand side by side — no matter what.
Today, as we celebrate 27 years… 14 + 13,
I can honestly say I don’t just love you more —
I respect you more, I admire you more, and I’m more grateful for you than ever.
27 years doesn’t even feel real…
We’ve been through a lot…
And if anything, it’s only made one thing clearer:
There’s no one I’d rather do life with.

Some moments don’t give you good options.
But they do give you a choice.
A choice in how you see it.
A choice in what you believe about it.
A choice in who you become because of it.
This past year put me in many of those moments.
Where nothing made sense.
Where doing “everything right” still led to loss.
Where the easy path would’ve been to stay angry… stay stuck… stay in that story.
And honestly, part of me wanted to.
Because sometimes that feels justified.
But I’ve learned this:
The choices we make in those moments don’t just change what we do next…
they actually influence what happens next.
They shape how we experience the world.
And over time, they shape how the world responds back to us.
You can choose to close off.
Or you can choose to stay open.
You can choose to stay in the question of “why did this happen to me?”
Or you can choose to ask “what can this become through me?”
Neither choice is easy.
But one keeps you stuck…
and one moves you forward.
I don’t have all the answers.
But I do know this-
Even in the moments that don’t make sense…
we still have a say in what we do with them.
And sometimes that choice…
is what changes everything.
