The biggest weekend in Indianapolis is behind us.

Over 300,000 visitors. A million conversations about cars. The west side of the city back to its normal hum. Memorial Day spent the way it should be.

For us at Edwards Transmissions+, this weekend is a reminder of what this city is built on. Hard work. Skilled hands. A culture that respects what happens under the hood.

We have been serving Central Indiana drivers for 40+ years. Through 44 of the city's biggest weekends. Through every era of automotive change. Through generations of customers who trusted us with their vehicles, and trusted their kids to drive vehicles we worked on.

May closes. Summer begins. Seven locations are here when you need us.

A big week for Francisco Valle.

Francisco celebrated his 7-year anniversary with Edwards Transmissions+ on May 28 and his birthday on May 29.

Francisco serves as our Shop Foreman, a role that requires both technical depth and the ability to lead other technicians through complex diagnostic and repair work. Seven years into this job, his knowledge of transmissions and his steady presence in the shop are a real asset to our team and to every customer who comes through our doors.

Happy birthday and thank you for seven years, Francisco.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Torque Converter Lockup Clutch

The torque converter lets an automatic transmission-equipped vehicle sit still at idle without stalling. It does that by using fluid coupling instead of a direct mechanical connection between the engine and transmission.

That fluid coupling is efficient for launching the vehicle, but at highway speeds it wastes energy through what is called slippage. To eliminate that loss, modern torque converters include a lockup clutch that mechanically locks the engine and transmission together once the vehicle reaches cruising speed.

When the lockup clutch operates correctly, fuel economy improves and transmission fluid temperature drops. When it fails, the symptoms are specific. A shudder that feels like a rumble strip at steady highway speeds, between roughly 40 and 60 mph. Hesitation when the torque converter tries to lock. Increased fuel consumption that shows up on the highway, not around town.

Shudder in the torque converter lockup clutch is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed transmission symptoms. It often gets blamed on tires or engine misfires. A proper diagnosis at a transmission-focused shop identifies it correctly the first time.

20 years.

Chris Coffman joined Edwards Transmissions+ on May 19, 2006. Two decades later, he is still under the hood, still diagnosing, still one of the reasons our customers get a straight answer and a quality repair.

Twenty years in this trade is not common. It takes commitment to keep learning as vehicles get more complex, and it takes a work ethic that shows up every day regardless of what the job is.

When a customer leaves our shop with a transmission running the way it should, Chris is often part of the reason. Twenty years of that work adds up to thousands of vehicles back on the road, thousands of families getting to work, school, and home safely.

Thank you, Chris. 20 years. That is something worth recognizing.

Five years.

Michael Stamatopoulos joined Edwards Transmissions+ on May 10, 2021 as part of our management team. Five years in, his steady judgment and commitment to how this shop operates have made a real difference.

Managing a transmission shop is not a role that rewards shortcuts. It requires attention to detail, accountability to customers, and the ability to support a technician team that works on complex repairs every day. Michael brings all of that to the role.

Thank you for five years, Mike.
