Surgery is risky business. 😎 When it comes to infection, the risk factors add up. While surgeons recognize many of the risk factors associated with infection, translating those factors into an individualized risk estimate has remained a challenge. Using data from the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI), investigators developed a novel preoperative calculator to predict a patient’s risk of developing PJI within 90 days of surgery. The model incorporated patient demographics, comorbidities, social factors, and surgeon-specific variables. The result? A personalized estimate of infection risk that can help guide patient counseling, shared decision-making, and targeted preoperative optimization. As arthroplasty continues to move toward precision medicine, tools like this may help us shift from simply identifying risk factors to quantifying risk for the patient sitting in front of us.
