“What Will We Teach Our Children”
by Linda Flynn
“We often tell our children they can be what they strive to be. In the greatest country in the world, the land of the brave and free.
Yet who does that freedom encompass once some further oppress,
Those who are already struggling, and are therefore thought of as less.
What will we teach our children?
For they learn from what they see.
Will they learn to treat others as equals with respect and dignity?
Will they learn that regardless of status, there is value in us all?
Will they learn that whether they have little or much, they can still stand tall?
We teach them that they must be in a lifelong pursuit of endless wealth. We teach them that to gain loyalty must be done by deceit or stealth.
If we teach them that the wealth of men is determined by how much they make, will they learn that money’s not everything? There is so much more at stake.
Will we teach them to be intolerant, and to live a life of hate, and to think that those who have darker skin are somehow second rate?
Will we teach them to look down on women, the elderly, and the poor, and to idolize the people whom they think have so much more?
How will they learn compassion if they never have to give? How will they learn to show mercy if they don’t know how others live?
If they have not known honesty, how will they learn to be fair? If they never learned adversity, how will they learn to care?
We want them to live better than we have. That’s understood. But if we make life too easy, we will do more harm than good.
If they don’t listen to what we say, they’ll watch the things we do.
So what will be the end result of the things they’ve learned from you?”
We are proud to have been able to serve Linda recently with critical home repairs. She gifted us with words.
