Many of our therapy teams visit libraries, schools, or read aloud to children through our Paws to Read program, and we’re often asked for dog-themed book recommendations. Each month, Paws & Think’s Youth Services Coordinator, Shannon Gaughan-Kelly, shares her top pick for a children’s book featuring dogs—perfect to add to your library bag, classroom, or to gift to a young reader!

Arfy returns in this heartwarming book by Hoosier author and illustrator Troy Cummings. While out exploring, Arfy discovers a kitten who needs a home. Since his human is allergic, he can’t keep her, so he turns to the same method that helped him find his own forever home—writing letters.

Many of the people who receive Arfy’s letters are willing to give the kitten a chance, but none are quite the right fit. Arfy doesn’t give up and eventually finds the perfect home for her at a senior living community, where she brings joy to the residents and receives plenty of love in return.

Filled with heartfelt, humorous letters and clever wordplay, this book is a great choice for reading aloud or taking turns reading one-on-one. It also shares an important message about finding the right home for every pet. Resources for helping rescue animals are included at the end, and Troy Cummings’ charming illustrations make it easy to fall in love with both Arfy and the sweet kitten. 🐶😺
