This magical fourth meal was the inspired creation of Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford, a close friend and Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria. Bored of the interminable stretch of time between lunch and dinner, in the mid-1840s Anna began regularly inviting friends to join her for tea, cakes and sandwiches in the afternoon. Soon enough, all of Victorian high society had caught on ☕️
