Toni L. Herron BSN, RN, CHEP, is the inaugural Education Compliance Officer for the Indiana State Board of Nursing and has held this role since 2014. In this position, she is solely responsible for the oversight of the 95 pre-licensure nursing education programs currently in operation in the State of Indiana. She serves as the eyes and ears of the Indiana State Board of Nursing as she conducts site visits of all accredited pre-licensure nursing programs in the state, as well as reviews all applications for new programs in the state. She serves as the Board’s liaison to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Board of Proprietary Education and as the education liaison to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. She also functions as the primary subject matter expert for nursing specific issues at the Professional Licensing Agency.

Ms. Herron graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1976. Her nursing journey began as a new graduate in the Emergency Room (ER) at the former Wishard Memorial Hospital, now Eskenazi Health, followed by the role of the Indiana Director of Nursing for the American Red Cross, where she directed volunteer health care providers in a wide range of disaster related duties. She returned to emergency nursing for 35 years, followed by 7 years as the first Emergency Preparedness Director for a large local health system.

In her role with the Board, Ms. Herron serves as liaison between nursing education, healthcare, and government. Recognizing that each entity speaks a different language, she spends a considerable amount of time facilitating communicating between the three. She enjoys the opportunity to play a small part in making sure that graduates receive the best nursing education possible and holding programs to account for providing the best possible education to students. She also works to ensure that nursing graduates understand the effect of nursing rules and statutes on nursing licensure.
