“Imagine feeling panic rising in a grocery store before anyone else notices it.
Now imagine your dog noticing first.”
Psychiatric service dogs are trained to recognize subtle changes in breathing, movement, scent, or behavior and respond with trained tasks that help their handler stay safe and grounded.
For individuals with anxiety disorders, these dogs may be trained to:
• interrupt escalating panic attacks
• guide their handler to an exit or quiet space
• provide grounding through deep pressure therapy
• create space in crowded environments
• interrupt harmful repetitive behaviors
• retrieve medication or a phone
• wake handlers from nightmares or night terrors
Psychiatric service dogs can also become important social facilitators. Their presence may help a person feel safer and more confident while interacting with others and navigating the world around them.
Over time, repeated positive experiences can help rebuild confidence, reduce fear responses, and literally help rewire the brain’s response to stressful situations.
These dogs are more than companions; they are highly trained partners that can help people regain independence, confidence, and stability in everyday life.
Mental health disabilities are real, and for some individuals, a trained service dog can be life-changing. ❤️

A heartfelt thank you to the Rotary Club of Indianapolis for their generous contribution to support improvements to our dog runs and kennel areas at Medical Mutts Service Dogs.
Because of community partners like Rotary, we’re able to create safer, more enriching spaces for the rescue dogs training to become life-changing service dogs for individuals living with disabilities.
This investment is helping us strengthen our mission of transforming lives on both ends of the leash; one dog, one person, and one partnership at a time. ❤️🐾
Thank you for believing in the work we do and the people and dogs we serve every day.
