My Story
I am an entrepreneur from the Midwest looking to better provide for me and my son. I have been in the corporate world for 30+ years. 27 years and currently as an IT professional. Over many years I have been a youth group advisor, Sunday School teacher, Middle School teacher, and have worked with kids of many ages to help make a difference in their lives.
Back in 2014 I became a foster parent. Together I was able to make it possible for that family be successfully reunified and out of the system one year later.
In 2015, I met my soon to be adopted son whom I fostered to adoption as he was just turning 11. It's been quite a journey over the last 6+ years. He has come very far but working with children who have had sever childhood trauma it is a marathon and not a sprint. Being loved and having consistent positive relationships is really what in the end makes the most difference.
At the very end of 2021 and the start of 2022 out of the blue comes brain cancer. I have Primary CNS Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. 3 masses right now (a big, a medium, and a small one). It showed itself at the very end of December causing my right leg to not function correctly. No idea what was going on I went to the ER in early January and was in the hospital for 24 days. I have had the most thorough internal physical you could have. I’ve been in every scanner, machine, ultrasound you could think of. Had 3 MRIs. At least below the head I am cancer free.
There have been many ups and downs during this journey and 2 times what would have to be called miracles came about at just the right time to get me to where I am today. Function of my right leg went from better to worse. All the way to loosing functionality of my whole right side. At one point I couldn’t move my right hand to hold anything. Couldn’t write, couldn’t feed my self with that hand and need 2 people to get me up out of bed and move a short distance. Thankfully with treatment things got better and functionality came back. First with steroids before we had the full diagnosis of what I have. Now knowing I was transferred to a cancer center where I am undergoing treatment with 8 cycles total (once every two weeks) of Chemo.
Thankfully the Chemo is working and has significantly made a difference. With the steroids I temporarily got my right arm function fully back and my right leg functionality better but still affected. That of course would not be maintainable for a long period of time. With the first Chemo treatment the night before we had to decide what regiment to come up with and hopefully maintain with steroids to be functional to some extent, etc. the Chemo’s effects were felt. The 1st Chemo treatment made the largest mass (the one causing my issues that brought me in) to shift twice. That moved this mass away from being over the part of my brain where it was affecting my right side. That brought back all right-side functionality and turned back on my right leg. That totally changed everything. Just leaving parts of my right side needing to relearn its functionality due to not being used for so long properly (especially my right leg and 2 minor functions of my right arm I found out later). The crippling effects were gone. Then the second Chemo significantly shrunk all 3 masses especially the largest one 80%. The next 2 rounds of chemo have shrunk the masses some more and I just recently got my 5th treatment.
Being fortunate by getting wind of my cancer before it really, really was badly affecting me, I am winning the battle of getting the Lymphoma into remission. Then will come phase 2 right after these cycles of Chemo treatment with a more aggressive approach for long term results such as a Stem-Cell Transplant with a mix of different Chemo meds.
Currently with rehab and exercises ongoing with my right leg I have almost gotten it back to fully 100% functionality. I have come far quickly that I can walk well and cleared to drive. The Chemo has given me my life back and I’m 100% healthy. With these great improvements and current health, I continue to focus and fight these 3 masses in my brain. I feel fortunate I am ahead of the game right now and plan to capitalize on it and win the battle. Only time will tell…
