Tonight, a man will watch fireworks from a lawn chair in his brother's backyard.

Two years ago, he watched them alone through a window, holding a drink he'd promised himself he wouldn't pour. Nobody knew what that night cost him. And somewhere between the first firework and the last, he made a decision.

The next morning, he picked up the phone.

Today our whole country celebrates freedom, and it's worth celebrating loudly. The flags, the cookouts, the sky lighting up over every town in America. It's one of the most beautiful things we do together.

And for some people, this day carries a second meaning. A personal one. Because they know what it took to win their own freedom back. The quiet decision. The hard phone call. The first clear morning.

So tonight, when the fireworks start, we'll be celebrating right along with everyone else. And we'll be thinking of the people who found their own independence this year, and the ones who are one brave moment away from it.
