The cranial cavity contains the sphenoid bone, which is located between the two temporal bones at their anterior margins and between the frontal, ethmoid, and occipital bones at their posterior margins.

It is attached to the muscles that move the skull and forms part of the base of the skull. It is also involved in sight, hearing, and smell.
