Our archives are full of fascinating snapshots that tell the story of policing in Kenton County over the decades.

In this "Look Back" photo, officers are disposing of barrels of illegal moonshine that had been seized during an investigation. Once confiscated, the contents were emptied before the barrels were discarded.

This morning, the Kenton County Police Department Honor Guard had the privilege of leading off the City of Edgewood’s annual Fourth of July Parade. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

An empty home can become an easy target for thieves, but there are steps you can take to help protect your property while you're away:

• Avoid posting about your trip on social media or sharing vacation photos until you return home.

• Store valuables such as jewelry, electronics and important documents in a safe or out of sight from windows.

• Double check that all doors, windows, garages and exterior gates are locked and secured before leaving.

• Ask a trusted friend, family member or neighbor to keep an eye on your home. Bringing in mail, alternating lights or moving trash cans can make it appear someone is still home. You can also place a temporary hold on your mail.

• Never leave spare keys hidden outside while you're away.

Taking a few precautions before your trip can help you return home with one less thing to worry about. Safe travels!
