The Independence Fire District has been able to grow our department again in an effort to better serve our community.

Beginning July 1, 2026, an administrative Training/Inspection Captain position began as well as the hiring of five new full-time employees. This is in addition to the additional three full-time employees that were added in October 2025. In conjunction with the new employees, IFD has also transitioned away from the partial Kelly Day that has been in place since the 1980s and moved to a full Kelly Day.

The new Full Kelly day schedule is a significant investment in our firefighters by improving work life balance, reducing annual hours worked, and providing additional time for rest, recovery, and family. It also brings the average number of hours worked weekly down from 53 hours to 48 hours, saving on additional overtime costs.
