One year ago today, 26 Aug 2021, @ 5:36 p.m. local time, the su***de bomber struck, detonating a vest packed with explosives and ball bearings killing along with 13 U.S. service members at Abbey Gate.

As you go about your day please remember Staff Sgt. Nicholas Ray Carnes and his family. SSGT. Carnes of Ludlow, was killed Aug. 26, 2007 by small arms fire during a firefight in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. Carnes was a member of 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery in Carrollton and deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in March, 2007. Carnes joined the KY Guard in 1999, at the age of 17. His civilian occupation was Riverboat Captain for BB Riverboats in Newport. Carnes was less than a month away from celebrating his first wedding anniversary when he perished. In May 2009, the United States Postal Service facility located at 513 6th Avenue in Dayton, Ky., was named the “Staff Sergeant Nicholas Ray Carnes Post Office.
