"Storm Over The Tyrrhenian Sea"
Encaustic on cradled wood panel
9x12inch
2020
:
This piece from 2020, hangs in my daughter’s home. I get to see it when we chat face-to-face. It’s supposed to be of the Tyrrhenian Sea, however, I can’t help but to see a tornado in this storm. Maybe it’s because we are preparing for the possibility of a tornado today or tomorrow. Twisters are on my mind. Can’t help it. Just happy to share an old work of art.

I’ve run out of gas. No. I don’t mean I’m tired. There’s no butane. There’s no propane. I’ll go out tomorrow and get some…but in the meantime this is where I am in this piece.

“Branches Of Copper”
Encaustic and inks on cradled board
8x8inch
2026
:
Abstraction of copper colored branches and metallic bits being wind blown. What fun this was playing with the inks.
:
I first used black Bombay ink then layered medium over it and continued to add colored ink from Birmingham Pen Company. There is a great difference in the two brands. Dr. Martin’s Bombay ink is very compatible with encaustic. Birmingham, not so much, however I did manage to get it to “stick.” It looks so rich and fabulous on paper; I hoped to carry that onto the wax. I suppose there’s a higher ratio of water in the composition.
:
I sprayed it with alcohol and that brought up the metallic luster. I set it afire with the torch. That created divots in the initial wax layer. There was a great deal of experimentation with the ink.
:
Finally, I “sealed” it with Sepia Bombay and here it is. Lots of splatter from the heat gun and the torch and from hand application with the eyedropper.
