If you know me well, you know how much I love a good adventure. I always say I want to die having a great adventure instead of wilting away in a nursing home. Well, I started out on an adventure Tuesday, just like that. My grandson from Kansas is visiting me for a week. We started out Monday looking for arrowheads. We soon realized that arrowheads were scarce, but fossils abounded in local creeks. On the first day, we found several shelled critters with a long official name, that were nicknamed "Devil's toenails". The second day we went to a very muddy site. I started sliding down a very steep hill and thought, "Wow this is cool, just like snow skiing!"....until my feet dropped into quicksand and my upper body kept going downhill. "Faceplant" into quicksand. I tried to use my arm to push myself up, but they just went down to nothing and nothing more. As I lay there sinking further in the sand, I thought, "OMG, I'm going to die right here under the bridge having a great adventure." Fortunately, Christopher had given me a book called. "How to Escape Darn Near Anything". You guessed it. I was able to slowly unstick my arms and feet one at a time and slowly wiggle toward a log. Once I reached the log, I knew it was just a matter of pulling the rest of my body out. We came home with a bunch of fossilized oyster shells and a few shark teeth.
Yesterday we tubed down the Brazos. I did my due diligence. I wore a tee shirt and covered my face with sunscreen. Unfortunately, at the last minute, I decided to wear swim shorts instead of the capris I was wearing. I received a very severe sunburn from shorts line to shoe line. Today I can barely walk or bend my knees. We followed up our tubing by going to another fossil site where I found a few more shark teeth. Fun times!.....George just doesn't understand my idea of a good time.
