A single mother is going viral after an emotional post describing what she says was a humiliating experience at her son's private school's annual Father & Son Gala.

The mother, who has raised her 8-year-old son alone for most of his life, says she purchased tickets months in advance and believed she would be participating alongside her son in the event's ceremonial activities. Instead, she claims school officials informed her upon arrival that while she and her son were welcome to attend dinner, they would not be allowed to participate in the official father-son portions of the evening, despite paying $275.

According to the viral post, the pair arrived dressed for the occasion, with the mother wearing a formal black gown and her son in a tuxedo.

The mother says the situation became especially painful when her son realized he would be the only child in his class sitting out during portions of the ceremony. School officials reportedly told her the event was specifically designed for fathers and sons and that they were unaware she intended to participate herself. However, the mother disputes that claim, saying her son's teacher was fully aware of their family situation and had known for years that she routinely filled both parental roles.

"I've attended every Father’s Day breakfast, every Donuts With Dad event, every father-child activity because there is no father involved," she said. "This wasn't a surprise to anyone."
