Because they weren’t promised help. They were promised status. For generations, white people in poverty were told, “You may not have much, but at least you’re better than someone.” So when a politician offers to go after “those people”—immigrants, Black folks, q***r folks—it feels like protection. Like someone’s finally standing up for them. But that’s the con. When the cuts come, they hit everyone. Those school closures? Those hospital shutdowns? That lost food assistance? It hits their kids, too. They end up applauding policies that hurt their own families, all because they were told their enemy lived next door—not in the boardroom or on the Senate floor. This isn’t stupidity. It’s learned loyalty to a lie. A lie that taught them to vote for punishment instead of progress. For racial pride instead of shared prosperity. It was never meant to help them.
