Most people know Tuskegee. Most people know Alabama State. 📚
But there's an HBCU sitting right in the heart of Huntsville that doesn't always get its flowers — and it's been quietly producing excellence since 1896.
Oakwood University was founded on a 360-acre farm in Huntsville, Alabama, by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, originally as a school for formerly enslaved people and their descendants. From those humble beginnings, it grew into a fully accredited four-year university that has shaped generations of Black doctors, nurses, educators, ministers, scientists, and community leaders.
Oakwood has produced some of the most respected voices in Black Adventist life and beyond. Its nursing and health sciences programs have sent Black healthcare professionals into communities across the country. Its theology school has trained preachers and scholars who carry the gospel with both faith and intellect. 🙏🏾
Alabama has more HBCUs than almost any other state — and every single one of them carries a story worth knowing.
If you have a connection to Oakwood University, drop your class year in the comments. Let's celebrate this hidden crown of Black Huntsville. 🏛️✊🏾
