Parents with kids in skate lessons please read.
We’ve been getting a lot of feedback from parents whose kids are being told by skate coaches to move up to a bigger deck. The reasoning is usually that a bigger board is easier to teach on it offers more stability, better balance, and requires less adjustment from the coach.
While that may make instruction easier, it doesn’t always benefit the kid.
For younger skaters, going too big can actually slow down progression. Bigger decks take more effort to turn, maneuver, and control. Yes, kids may fall less, but falling less doesn’t always mean learning more. Proper sizing allows kids to build real board control, confidence, and skill.
If a skate coach suggests going bigger, pause and consider why. Staying on the correct size deck for your child’s age and body helps them progress faster and enjoy skating more. The goal shouldn’t be what’s easiest for the coach it should be what’s best for the kid.
That’s why we always recommend keeping kids on the right sized deck for their stage of development.
