QUICK QUIZ: Let’s test your life-safety knowledge with a question we hear all the time during our training sessions:
TRUE OR FALSE: An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can accidentally shock someone whose heart is beating normally if a bystander presses the button by mistake.
What do you think? Drop your guess—TRUE or FALSE—in the comments right now before you read any further!
(Give us your guess! 👇)
THE ANSWER: FALSE! ❌
You can breathe a sigh of relief. It is anatomically and technologically impossible to accidentally shock someone with a modern AED.
Here is why: The machine does 100% of the thinking for you. Once you place the adhesive pads on a person's chest, the AED automatically analyzes their heart rhythm. It is looking for very specific, chaotic electrical patterns (like Ventricular Fibrillation). If the person’s heart is beating normally—or if it has stopped completely in a way that a shock won't fix—the machine simply will not arm itself. You could mash the shock button all day long, and it will never deliver electricity unless it is medically necessary.
At Upbeat CPR, we show you these these incredible, life-saving devices so they are no longer scary. We believe that confidence is just as important as the mechanics of chest compressions.

I spy with my eye an AED machine in public. How many can you find this week? We'd love to see where you found an AED machine.

“What if I press the button and accidentally shock someone?”
If you’ve ever looked at an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) box on a wall and felt a wave of anxiety, you are not alone. TV shows make it look like a high-stakes guessing game, but the real-world reality is completely different.
Here is the secret about an AED: It is completely foolproof because the machine does all the thinking for you!
When you open an AED, it immediately starts speaking to you, walking you through every single step in a clear voice. Here is what actually happens when you turn it on:
1) It gives instructions: It tells you exactly what steps need to be performed next.
2️) It shows you where to place them: The adhesive pads have clear drawings printed on them showing you precisely where they go on the chest.
3️) It analyzes the heart: Once the pads are on, the AED tells everyone to step back while it reads the person’s heart rhythm.
4️) It makes the safety decision: This is the most important part. An AED will never, ever deliver a shock unless the person’s heart is in a specific, chaotic rhythm that requires it. If they don't need a shock, the machine simply will not let you give one. You cannot override it, and you cannot make a mistake.
An AED isn’t a dangerous medical tool meant only for paramedics—it’s a safety net designed for you to use during a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.
At Upbeat CPR, we demystify these devices so you feel 100% confident using them. The box on the wall shouldn’t be intimidating. Let’s learn how it works together!

Did you know that sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, yet less than half of the people who experience it receive the immediate help they need before professional medical personnel arrive?
CPR and quick access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can double—or even triple—a person’s chance of survival. The biggest barrier keeping people from stepping in isn't a lack of care; it’s a lack of confidence.
