Have you ever dreamt about what it would be like to visit Mars? Come check out "Girls on Mars", 2024 oil on canvas, by Janet Maya in our upcoming exhibition "Stillness of Architecture".
“In my work, stillness is not a lack of motion - it is an act of being present.” In “Their Still Water Runs Deep,” we are transported to the ocean shore, where faceless bathers in vintage bathing suits and bathing caps stand still in water. They dissolve into the calmness of blue blocks of color. In “Boundless Love,” a white headscarf adorns a monochromatic figure, its quick, expressive brushstrokes a tribute to the artist’s mother and the Jackie O elegance of that era. In “Gilded 2025 #1,” an arresting and formal 6-foot figure in a gold-leafed dress, long black gloves, and a tall hat fills the canvas. The surface of the dress holds reflection and density, shaping the figure into a still presence with a sense of quiet power and eminence. In “Girls Waiting on Mars,” figures are suspended on the red planet, held in a state of pause between arrival and continuation.
For Maya, “the plan is never a plan. I begin a painting by sketching directly into the paint, so I don’t lose any spontaneity. I sculpt figures using blocks of color, adding and subtracting until there is an edited space. That space invites intimacy and stillness, which creates room for the viewer’s experience.”

You are invited to the opening reception of 35 Years in Photographs by José Picayo. The reception will be held on April 25, 2026 from 5 pm to 7 pm at 234 Warren Street, Hudson, NY 12534
After 28 years of absence, Picayo returns to his native Cuba. He captures the world he left when he was six years old. Memories of old clothes hung to dry in the sun, and of old washbasins in the yards of his Havana neighborhood have been translated into images of a silent and evanescent presence. Showing the deterioration through the patina that time and circumstance has left upon it, these images were easily recovered. The inhabitants, the island’s architecture, and its customs seemed to be suspended in time.
An unapologetic user of film, Picayo, prides himself on his avoidance of digital processing for his personal work. When asked why it remains his preferred medium, Picayo answers, “Digital is so overpoweringly real; photography is more magical to me.” His passion for older photographic processes is complemented by his use of both 20” x 24” and 8” x 10” Polaroids, as well as the use of large-format cameras for his commercial work. For Picayo, large-format film is a medium where he can capture a moment in time. Just to hold the photograph in his hands is enough.
