Why did Monmouth County flood so badly today? It came down to a dangerous combination of deep atmospheric moisture, a stalled weather boundary, and thunderstorms that repeatedly moved over the same communities.

Early this morning, the National Weather Service warned that storms would be capable of producing rainfall rates greater than 2 inches per hour. The Weather Prediction Center also highlighted deep atmospheric moisture and a nearby stalled boundary, creating an environment where thunderstorms could repeatedly move over the same areas instead of quickly moving out.

That is the critical piece: the storms were not just heavy, they were repeating. With deep atmospheric moisture in place, each storm was capable of producing torrential rainfall. As thunderstorms trained over the same corridor, rainfall totals climbed rapidly, overwhelming roads, storm drains, streams, basements, and other low-lying areas in a short amount of time.

This radar-estimated rainfall map shows the result: a concentrated rainfall maximum over eastern Monmouth County, where radar estimated around 6 to 7 inches of rain.

The map also shows an area of exceptionally heavy radar-estimated rainfall just south of Brooklyn, with estimates exceeding 10 inches over the Atlantic Ocean. Because the most intense core remained offshore, the worst flooding potential stayed over water rather than a densely populated urban area.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest official rainfall total in NJ was 5.74 inches in Neptune City, while unofficial reports indicated slightly higher totals between Elberon and Deal.

That combination is why flooding developed so quickly across parts of Monmouth County.
