We want to reach as many patriotic students as possible to compete for the Voice of Democracy grand prize of $35,000 — paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school — or the Patriot’s Pen grand prize of $5,000! Other national prizes range from $500 to $21,000!

Youth Scholarships If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $30,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has announced the details of its 2025-2026 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen audio essay competitions!

This year’s shared theme is “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

Entries are due to VFW Posts no later than October 31, 2025 - this is two months from today!

The VFW Voice of Democracy National first-place winner will receive a $35,000 scholarship; this contest is for students in grades 9-12. The VFW Patriot’s Pen National first-place winner will receive $5,000; this contest is for students in grades 6-8.
