Thanks to .show host Ernie Manouse and guest host Doris Childress for interviewing Dr. Demetrius Pearson and I about our Black Cowboy/ girl Preservation Project. “Black cowboys and cowgirls have been a part of the story of the American West for generations, even if their contributions were often left out of the history books. The Black Cowboy/girl Preservation Project at the University of Houston is working to preserve these stories. We talk with Dr. Tara Green, Chair of the African American Studies Department, and Dr. Demetrius Pearson, Associate Professor of Health and Human Performance, tell us more. The oral history archive will be housed at the Houston Public Library’s African American History Research Center.”
Join us and in celebrating the 150th year anniversary of Alice Dunbar-Nelson’s birth. Born in New Orleans in 1875, Dunbar-Nelson became a respected teacher, fiction writer, poet, journalist and suffragist. She graduated from Straight University () before marrying Paul Laurence Dunbar—her first of three husbands. She would later be invited to become an honorary member of .
