Rancho El General
WOOOIITTTTTT,
Amigos…with these extremely hot temperatures, I’d like to ask everyone to please take extra good care of your horses. They give us their all, and it’s our responsibility to keep them healthy and safe.
If you’re planning to go on a trail ride, please keep these recommendations in mind:
• Make sure your horses have plenty of water before heading out and are well hydrated.
• Avoid riding during the hottest part of the day. If you’re planning a long trail ride, it’s a good idea to prepare your horse throughout the week by keeping them well hydrated and, if needed, providing electrolytes or oral supplements based on your horse’s individual needs.
• Don’t push your horse too hard, especially if the ride is long or the weather is hot and humid.
• Take short breaks along the way so your horse can rest, and keep an eye on their breathing.
• If you notice heavy breathing, excessive sweating, weakness, or your horse is not acting normally, stop immediately and move them to a shaded area. Give them time to recover, and if necessary, seek veterinary attention.
• After the ride, avoid giving large amounts of ice-cold water all at once. Let your horse cool down gradually before allowing them to drink freely.
Just as important, we need to take care of ourselves too. Stay well hydrated, bring plenty of water for the entire ride, wear a hat or cap, use sunscreen, and pay attention to how you’re feeling. Heat exhaustion can affect both the rider and the horse.
Let’s enjoy our trail rides while always putting the health and well-being of our horses—and ourselves—first.
Stay safe, and may God watch over you on every ride!
