Saying that profound autism requires more support does not mean we’re saying high-functioning autism is easy. It just means we’re being honest. It means some autistic people need 24/7 supervision to stay safe. Some cannot speak for themselves. Some have dangerous self-injury, pica, aggression, elopement, or lifelong care needs. And no, it’s not because of intellectual disability only. It’s autism. Severe autism.
Guess what?! SAying that out loud does not erase anyone else’s struggles.
Autism can be disabling at every level. But the type and intensity of support needed are not the same for everyone. That is not offensive. That is reality.
Acknowledging profound autism does not take services away from high-functioning autistic people. How can you be autistic and refusing to acknowledge some autistic people have more serious struggles than you do?
Pretending profound autism doesn’t exist takes visibility, research, funding, and support away from the people who need it most.
We can care about all autistic people without pretending all autistic people have the same life.
Do better.
