Inclusion is often measured by placement. Are students in general education? How much time are they there? These questions matter, but they do not tell the full story.

A student can be in a general education classroom and still not feel included.

So the real question becomes, what does belonging actually look like in our schools?

Belonging is not placement. It is participation, connection, and active engagement in the learning community.

Inclusive schools are not defined by where students sit, but by how students experience their day.

One of the most underutilized resources in schools today? Peers.

Peer support programs create opportunities for students to learn from, connect with, and support one another both academically and socially.

When schools intentionally build peer connections into classrooms, everyone benefits:
• Students feel more included and supported
• Friendships and understanding grow
• Teachers foster more collaborative classrooms
• School communities become stronger and more welcoming

Sometimes the most meaningful support comes from another student simply saying, “You’ve got a friend here.”

Different perspectives make stronger communities.

When individuals are supported in thinking for themselves while still working together, it creates space for creativity, respect, and real connection.

That’s where meaningful collaboration begins.
