It’s not often that Houston kicks off the last month of the year with actual cold weather… cue the jacket and gloves scavenger hunt!
Fun fact: cold weather can impact your fire alarm panel—especially the batteries. When cold air hits a warm environment, condensation can build inside the detection chamber and trigger the panel. And extended cold snaps? Those can drain batteries and lead to that familiar (and very annoying) chirping sound we all know too well.
Something else that can trigger the chirp is when the heater is used for the first time, burning off the layer of built-up dust that has accumulated over the last year. To a smoke detector this smell is just particles of combustion and will likely set off your smoke/duct detector!
While we can’t completely prevent condensation or guarantee battery life, here are a few tips that can help keep your system performing at its best:
Check the batteries:
During inspections, our skilled technicians will let you know if your batteries are due for replacement. It’s not a “money grab”—it’s part of ensuring both older and newer systems run at peak performance.
Keep the area clean:
Routine cleaning in and around the panel can reduce dust and debris, which are common culprits behind false alarms.
Reduce temperature fluctuations:
If your panel sits near an entryway or drafty area, temperature changes can increase condensation. Talk with your Fire Safe sales representative about whether relocating or protecting the panel can help extend its lifespan.
