Harris County Flood Control District
This is not your average excavator! Our new walking excavator can climb, step, and stabilize itself on steep slopes and uneven ground — especially helpful in bayou areas that are hard to reach with standard equipment.
Maintenance crews are already putting this agile machine to use for more efficient debris and sediment removal. This new tool is part of a $17 million investment in new equipment thanks to dedicated maintenance funds.

Getting out in the field helps us explain flood risk reduction projects more clearly.
Our Project Communications team recently toured the 961-acre Greens Bayou Wetlands Mitigation Bank to better understand the environmental and regulatory work that supports many Flood Control District projects.
Seeing this work firsthand helps our team provide residents with more accurate, helpful and easy-to-understand information about projects across Harris County.

Trail users along White Oak Bayou near Shepherd Drive can expect temporary closures during daytime construction hours as our maintenance team repairs a section of channel that has been damaged over time.
The maintenance work, happening upstream of North Durham Drive to downstream of North Shepherd Drive as part of the federal concrete channel repair program, includes removing and replacing existing concrete lining and installing steel panels to support the repairs.
What to know:
➡️ About 200 feet of trail east of Shepherd Drive will experience periodic closures from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Large equipment is operating in the area, and the closures are out of an abundance of caution to keep everyone safe.
️➡️ When the contractor is not onsite, the trail will be open for recreational use.
➡️ Detour information is available from Houston Parks Board: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=5532d390fb234779b0b9286744d85a2f
️➡️ This segment of maintenance-related construction is expected to take about three months, with additional work west of Durham Drive coming later. The overall project is expected to be completed in Q2 2027.
Residents and trail users are urged to follow all posted signs while crews work to complete these important repairs.

We had some good rain across the region last week, with some areas seeing over 8 inches 🌧️
Save water this week by skipping the sprinklers when you can. Nature already helped out.

As our meteorologists tracked Tropical Storm Arthur, our crews were out collecting flood measurements, removing fallen trees, and addressing issues that could restrict stormwater flow during heavy rain. Our crews always stay ready and are dispatched before and after major storms to clear debris.
We need your eyes and ears on the ground, especially before, during, and after a storm! If you see an issue, submit a service request at hcfcd.org/service-request or call 346-286-4197.
