This month, we are spotlighting Suhasini Lulla. Suhasini is a PhD candidate in the Genetics and Genomics graduate program at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Suhasini’s graduate work is part of an NIH-funded multi-institutional effort called the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) to provide a publicly available resource on the clinical importance of genes and variants. Under Dr. Sharon Plon’s mentorship and with guidance from members of a ClinGen Working Group, she is investigating the differences between constitutional (germline) and cancer-associated (somatic) mutational patterns in tumor suppressor genes. Completion of this research project will illuminate the underlying biology of hereditary versus sporadic tumorigenesis and broaden our understanding of hereditary cancer genetics. Suhasini received her Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology from Thadomal Shahani Engineering College, Mumbai, India, and worked as a research technician in Dr. Ann Leen’s immunotherapy lab at BCM before matriculating in the PhD program. Suhasini believes in encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM and has been volunteering as a small-group facilitator and career panelist for BCM’s community outreach program, Saturday Morning Science. She likes to spend her free time playing board games, visiting museums, and going on nature walks.
