Lucian Adams was a Mexican-American U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and one of the most decorated soldiers of World War II. He received the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military award for bravery, after single-handedly attacking German machine gun positions in France in 1944. Some key facts about him: * Born: October 26, 1922, in Port Arthur * Died: March 31, 2003, in San Antonio * Military service: U.S. Army, World War II * Unit: 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division * Heroic action: Near Saint-Dié, France, he advanced alone under heavy fire, destroyed 3 German machine-gun positions, killed 9 enemy soldiers, forced others to surrender, and reopened a crucial supply route. * He earned the nickname “The Tornado from Texas.” After the war, he worked for the Veterans Administration for decades and rarely talked about his own combat heroics. He reportedly said: “Because I’m no hero. I’m just an ex-soldier.” He’s also recognized as one of th e notable Hispanic/Mexican-American Medal of Honor recipients from World War II.
