🚨 UPDATE: The Board will also vote today on a newly proposed amendment by SBOE Member Audrey Young requiring students to learn about the establishment of Israel in 1948 – with no mention of Palestine, the Nakba, or the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. This one-sided framing leaves out essential history that every Texas student deserves to know.

This is in addition to SBOE Member Brandon Hall’s amendment. The proposed Social Studies TEKS contain inaccurate, biased language that unfairly singles out Islam and Muslims – including language describing the origins of Islam as “Muhammad’s brutal military campaigns against Jewish and Christian tribes, the institutionalization of slavery, and the taking of female captives as harem slaves.”

Texas students deserve standards that educate, not stigmatize. What gets adopted today will shape classrooms across Texas – and beyond – for years to come.
