For years, families built their college list the same way: a few reach schools, a couple of targets, and one or two "safety" flagships to fall back on if things didn't go their way.

That safety net is not disappearing, but planning is important.

The out-of-state math has changed. You can read more about how in our latest newsletter:

The test-optional era is quietly coming to an end — and the data backs it up.

Harvard. MIT. Yale. Dartmouth. Brown. Cornell. Stanford. One by one, the most selective universities in the country are bringing standardized testing requirements back. And even at schools still labeled test-optional, students who submit strong scores are getting in at meaningfully higher rates than those who do not.

Here is the truth most families are not hearing: test-optional was never test-irrelevant.
A strong SAT or ACT score remains one of the few things in this process your student can still fully control. And the families who start preparing now — before senior year piles on — are the ones who walk in with options.

The window to train for this is open right now.

Every bright future starts with a plan.

Right now, while it still feels like summer, we are sitting down with students and building exactly that — starting with test training. A strong SAT or ACT score is one of the most powerful tools your student has to open doors, and the work we are doing this summer is laying that foundation early, before the pressure of senior year sets in.

This is not about cramming. It is about preparing the right way, with enough time to actually see results.

If you want to give your student that same head start, let's talk.

Here is something I tell every family I work with: the summer before senior year is not the off-season.

It feels like a break. And your student deserves rest — I mean that. But the families who use this window intentionally show up for senior year in a completely different position than those who coast until September.

Test scores. Essays. College lists. Recommendation letters. Scholarship research. All of it is easier, better, and less stressful when it starts in June rather than October.

The window is open right now. Use it.

The test-optional era is over — and most families have not gotten the memo.

Harvard. Yale. MIT. Dartmouth. Brown. Cornell. Stanford. All requiring standardized test scores again. And the schools still labeled test-optional? They are favoring students who submit strong scores, too.

A strong SAT or ACT is one of the only things left in this process that your student can still control. And summer is the single best window to build that score before senior year pulls their focus in every other direction.

Don't wait until October to wish you had started in June.
