In my junk journal era ✨

I one billion percent recommend reading and watching ‘Project Hail Mary’ by Andy Weir. It’s a truly excellent and heartwarming story you should not miss!

It was a no for me dawg.

I had a lot of grievances with the story starting with the main character’s name—Waldo? I’m all for unconventional names and think girls being given traditionally masculine names can be very endearing, but fu***ng WALDO? It was an odd choice that wasn’t ever really explained. If there had been some kind of back story as to why her mother would name her that I’d be forgiving, but no.
Then there was the writing style. I read Jennette’s memoir ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ and really enjoyed how she wrote her own personal story. The detachment and the way she didn’t go into exceptional depth about some facets of her life made sense to me. It came off as more of a “straight to it”/self-preservation manner. But that style of writing for a work of fiction leaves the story feeling empty and depthless. Sure you get Waldo’s back story and yeah we get some of the more egregious, gritty details —more on that later—but the character of Waldo fell miserably flat with the prose consisting of nothing but one liners and very little emotional exploration. I got bored and disinterested in Waldo’s story after a while and found myself rolling my eyes when Waldo said something about preferring a writing style where the author “get’s to the point”.
