In my junk journal era â¨
I one billion percent recommend reading and watching âProject Hail Maryâ by Andy Weir. Itâs a truly excellent and heartwarming story you should not miss!

It was a no for me dawg.
I had a lot of grievances with the story starting with the main characterâs nameâWaldo? Iâm all for unconventional names and think girls being given traditionally masculine names can be very endearing, but fu***ng WALDO? It was an odd choice that wasnât ever really explained. If there had been some kind of back story as to why her mother would name her that Iâd be forgiving, but no.
Then there was the writing style. I read Jennetteâs memoir âIâm Glad My Mom Diedâ and really enjoyed how she wrote her own personal story. The detachment and the way she didnât go into exceptional depth about some facets of her life made sense to me. It came off as more of a âstraight to itâ/self-preservation manner. But that style of writing for a work of fiction leaves the story feeling empty and depthless. Sure you get Waldoâs back story and yeah we get some of the more egregious, gritty details âmore on that laterâbut the character of Waldo fell miserably flat with the prose consisting of nothing but one liners and very little emotional exploration. I got bored and disinterested in Waldoâs story after a while and found myself rolling my eyes when Waldo said something about preferring a writing style where the author âgetâs to the pointâ.
