Pumpkin carving tips for a gourd time:

Pick the right pumpkin: Look for one with a flat bottom (so it doesn’t roll away) and smooth skin for easier carving.

Cut from the bottom, not the top: It helps stabilize the pumpkin and makes placing a candle or light easier.

Scoop it clean: Use an ice cream scoop or large spoon to scrape the walls thin (about 1" thick) — this makes carving easier and helps the light shine through.

Trace your design first: Draw with a dry-erase marker or poke small holes along your design with a pin to use as a carving guide.

Use the right tools: A pumpkin carving kit is safer and easier than kitchen knives. Serrated blades work best for detail.

Light it up smart: Use battery-operated tea lights or LED candles — safer, longer lasting, and windproof.

Preserve your masterpiece: Rub the cut edges with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to slow down drying and mold.
