The last few days have been an exercise of patience! There was a post last Friday about a kitten in the median of Hwy 59 at North Park. One of our directors and her daughter went to assess since they live nearby. He was easy to find but upon careful approach, he darted straight into the storm drain where all the freeway water drains off to. The next 3 nights were hours of sitting with a trap and no luck of him going in. Cat food nor fried chicken were enough to draw him in.
The forecast paints a grim picture for a kitten living in a storm drain that will soon fill with rushing water. We knew he had to be trapped before the rains come!
So tonight, the 4th night, we tried again with salmon. First putting a can in the blender with water to make a salmon juice, I made a liquid scent trail from the storm drain to the trap. Then pieces of salmon from the front to back of the trap. After almost 4 hours of seeing him sitting next to the trap, I decided to call it a night. Grabbed my flashlight to walk up the median to pick up the trap. About half way there, I hear the unmistakable "snap" of the trap closing. I start running to it, look inside, and FINALLY, there he is!
He will go for a TNR appointment, then will be given an appropriate amount of time to determine if can be socialized or not. If so, he'll go into the adoption program. If he's feral, he'll be relocated and acclimated to our directors property. But either way, he'll never have to sit in the median of a freeway or sleep in a storm drain ever again. And a hungry tummy is a mere memory from this point on.
Welcome to the pack, Parker!
