Business Interruption Guyโ€™s business has been interrupted!

It sounds like that Seinfeld episode where Kramer planned to write a coffee table book on coffee tables.

A massive storm swept through Houston at 6:30 in the evening, plunging nearly one million people into darkness. Even now, on a Saturday afternoon, 750,000 households are still grappling with the aftermath without power.

For me, it is an inconvenience. I miss my dual-screen setup and sound system. I work in coffee shops and any vacant room with air conditioning and an outlet. This is nothing compared to what many clients face with a significant business disruption.

Little inconveniences like this are an excellent reminder to everyone in the insurance business to practice empathy and realize how traumatic a genuinely catastrophic event can be for those we serve.

After much thought, I've developed simple instructions to guide you through calculating a business interruption. These steps are designed to be easily understood and implemented.

These instructions will give you a directionally correct number. It will not provide all the arithmetic support you will probably need to convince the insurance accountant.

1. Calculate the revenue you lost due to the peril covered under your property policy.

2. Calculate all the expenses you did not have to pay because your business was damaged.
a. Salaries;
b. Raw materials;
c. Maintenance;
d. Utilities;
e. Etc.

3. Subtract the saved expenses from the lost revenue.

Have the insurance accountants put their calculations in this exact format? Then, you can compare the differences category by category.
