May brings together three powerful observances: National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and Stroke Awareness Month. At first glance they might seem separate, but they're deeply connected, and speech therapy sits right at the intersection of all three. Communication is at the heart of everything.

Communication and mental health are inseparable. When someone struggles to express themselves. Whether that's a child who can't find the words, a teen who avoids speaking in class, or an adult navigating a stutter, the emotional toll is real. Anxiety, isolation, and low self-esteem are common companions to communication disorders across every age group. Addressing communication needs isn't just about speech. It's about helping people show up more fully in their lives.

Stroke changes communication overnight. For many survivors, the loss of speech or language, known as aphasia, is one of the most disorienting and emotionally devastating effects of a stroke. Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), dysarthria, and cognitive-communication challenges are also common. Early and consistent speech therapy can make a meaningful difference in recovery and quality of life, not just physically, but in helping someone reclaim their voice and their identity.

Private speech therapy meets you where you are, at every stage of life. From toddlers with late language emergence, to school-age children navigating reading and social communication, to adults recovering from neurological events, private sessions offer individualized, consistent care that goes beyond what any single setting can provide on its own. There's no waitlist for life to get harder. Having a dedicated therapist who knows your history, goals, and pace, in your corner, makes a difference.

This month, Advent Therapy Solutions is celebrating all three observances because we believe communication is a lifelong need, and everyone deserves support that fits their life.

Spring is such a natural time to focus on growth and that includes your child’s communication skills. Especially as we celebrate reading during Read Across America in March, it’s the perfect reminder that books do so much more than tell stories, they build connection, confidence, and language. One of the simplest ways to support speech and language at home is storytime. Books about rain, gardens, baby animals, and life cycles are filled with repetition, rich vocabulary, and opportunities for conversation, without it ever feeling like therapy.

When you read playful, repetitive stories like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" or "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Frog!", you’re giving your child natural chances to practice speech sounds in a fun, low-pressure way. Books like "Planting a Rainbow" and "And Then It’s Spring" are wonderful for expanding vocabulary and teaching sequencing. Talk about what’s happening in the pictures. If your child says, “Flower,” you might model, “Yes! The yellow flower is growing.” That gentle expansion helps sentences grow naturally. Spring stories are also perfect for building comprehension. While reading books like "When Spring Comes" or "The Tiny Seed," ask simple questions: Who is planting? What happens next? Why did that change? After the story, see if your child can retell it in three simple steps. Stories about friendship and problem-solving, like "Duck & Goose" and "Here Comes the Easter Bunny!" create opportunities to talk about feelings and perspective-taking. And predictable books with strong visuals allow children to point, label, gesture, or use AAC to fully participate. Even fluency and voice skills can blossom during spring reading. Read slowly together. Use a soft voice for falling rain and an excited voice when the sun comes out. Keep it playful.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s connection.
