A recent study published in the journal 'Lung' revealed that reflux can potentially lead to lung damage by triggering an immune response. When acid is aspirated into the lungs, it exposes normally hidden proteins, Collagen-V and K-α-1 Tubulin, prompting the body to produce antibodies against them. Elevated levels of these antibodies were found in many GERD patients, suggesting undetected lung damage. This discovery may help identify GERD-related respiratory issues earlier, highlighting the importance of recognizing the broader effects of reflux beyond just digestive symptoms.
